Is Your Personality Written in the Cards

Any overview of the occult and what it can tell us about ourselves would be incomplete if we did not consult the cards. I had a tarot card reading online and was amazed at how accurate it was. Perhaps some of the accuracy came from my "imagination." I had to become a member to take the test. Regrettably, I was unable to find a free tarot reading. As you learn more about the cards, you can function as both the seeker and the reader. Just think about how popular you will be at parties; don your sweeping black gown, add heavy (and gaudy) jewelry, paint on oodles of make-up and dye your hair black- and you are ready to read. Perhaps a black cat sitting at your feet would be the perfect finishing touch. You may decide to embark on a fascinating new career.

The history of tarot cards is lengthy and fascinating. Interestingly, some believe that the images on tarot cards originated 15,000 years ago in ancient Egypt. The practice of reading and interpreting tarot cards, to peer into one's mist-shrouded future, dates from the 1780s. It appears that the deck currently in use evolved from the Visconti trumps, which were designed in the 1400s. Tarot as we know it, for divination, is believed to be the brainchild of Antoine Court de Gebelin. He theorized that tarot cards were the key to Egyptian mystical secrets. His source of information for this peculiar belief is not immediately apparent. Perhaps he read it in the cards. Unfortunately, for those of us awestruck by all things rooted in ancient Egypt, there appears to be little legitimate support for his interpretation. Nonetheless, if you find it intriguing and you would like to believe it, I will not burst your bubble. In fact, if it ever comes up in the United Nations, I will fight for your right to believe in any Gebelin fantasy you choose.

The first 22 cards in the deck are represented by Life's Lessons, Life's Choices, Life's Demons and Life's Rewards. The cards in Life's Lessons are the Fool, the Magician, the High Priestess, the Empress, the Emperor and the Hierophant. Each represents what we would consider personality characteristics (e.g., innocence, trust in intuition, nurturing, logic).

Life Choices cards are the Lovers, the Chariot, Strength, the Hermit and Justice. These, of course, represent the types of choices we make (e.g., responsibility, strength, harmony). They too are personality characteristics.

The Hanged Man, Death, Temperance, the Devil and the Tower represent life's Demons. They are the bumps in the road that are inevitable in life and the sinister human characteristics that frequently precede disaster. They sound forbidding, don't they?

This is the section of the cards to which I am naturally drawn-Life's Rewards. The cards are the Star, the Moon, the Sun, Judgment and the World. These are the rewards of good choices and learned experiences. They represent such things as positive attitude, dreams, contentment and self-actualization.

Can the tarot tell your future and explain your past? One never knows. Are you a person who would take pleasure in a tarot reading or learning more about tarot?
