People say that I am:
I'm pretty easygoing, and can adapt to almost anything. I don't let minor setbacks worry me too much. If a kayak were to tip over (a rare event, of course; kayaks are very stable in the water), I'd just consider it a chance for a nice swim. If a bicycle tyre goes flat, it's a chance for a nice walk. I have a quirky sense of humour; somewhat 'humour noir', in many ways.
Things that have bothered me:
I'm not interested in any instant romance, or serious committment, at this time of my life; so, a few dates have seemed a bit too eager, for my taste. I don't think anyone likes feeling pressured. I'm not looking for any 'exclusive' attachment, and looking less for romance than just some active friends who would likewise enjoy company for daytime events. I'd want to be friends, for a while, before any thought of romance would enter the picture.
I am looking for:
I'm not looking for a partner, so much as just some active single friends, living within 25 to 30 miles, who enjoy daytime activities. Like most folks, I like to be, and like to have, a friend who is even tempered, flexible, available now and then when some mutually interesting event is held, and able to pay their own way. I'm not looking for someone to pave my way, and I'm not in the position to pave anyone else's.
My funniest life experience:
Ever have 'one of those days'? I was expecting company to join me for lunch, at noon, here at the Elk River Ranch. At 11:30 a.m., I got an unexpected visit from a neighbour, who just stopped in to say 'Hello', while I was preparing food and beverages. I put coffee and water into a Farberware electric coffee percolator, put it on the kitchen counter that I'd just wiped down, and plugged it in. My neighbour and I went into the 'great room', so I could set the table, while we talked. The aroma of the coffee was tantilising. I asked my neighbour if she'd like 'a cuppa'. She said, 'Sure', so we went back into the kitchen, to find I'd failed to put the top on the coffee pot. The perking coffee was spouting out of the pot, like a volcano, all over the counter! What a mess! I giggled at my absent-mindedness. 'Stuff happens', I said, and pulled the plug on the coffee pot. I said, 'There's cold coffee, from this morning, in the fridge. May I microzap a cup for you?' My neighbour said, 'Sure, that will do just fine', so I poured an 'Irish coffee' glassful, put it in the microwave, and set it for two minutes (the 'norm', for my microwave). While it heated, I continued to wipe down the kitchen counter. Evidently, the micro still had some time on the timer; when I put the cup in, I actually added two minutes to existing time. Because we were still 'chatting', it was not until about three minutes passed that we realised the micro was taking too long. By then, the coffee had 'boiled over' the Irish coffee glass. The microwave was now 'flooded' with coffee, just as the kitchen counter had been. That's when we heard a car pull up to the house! "Think I'll make some Earl Grey, instead of coffee, for my guests .", I laughed almost to the point of tears. My neighbour said she'd probably had all the caffine she needed, from her own monring coffee, anyway! Wonder what Juan Valdez - or Mrs. Folger - would have done? :~}
Cool Movies:
I have recently enjoyed 'Mumford', 'Next Stop: Wonderland', 'Fresh' (a remarkably well acted flick!), 'Dear Frankie'. 'Must Love Dogs' was a fun film, and is based on just this sort of thing - trying to find companionship via an online ad.
My Favorite Groups are:
I like Classical (Mozart, the 'Three B's' (Beethoven, Bach, Brahms), Vivaldi, Satie, Debussey, etc.); Celtic; Folk (Stan Rogers), some 'new age'('Enya'), 'Sting'; Classic Rock (Billy Joel, The Eagles, some Pink Floyd); some Country (Crystal Gayle, etc.) Love Dolly Parton's bluegrass albums. Even like bagpipes! But, no rap or 'hip hop', thank you .
I am looking for a personality like:
I've been independent since my retirement from NYNEX, in September of , at 42 yrs. of age. I took the early retirement incentive offer to spend more time with my husband, whose health was compromised by a serious stroke. Unfortunately, he passed away in January of . At the time, we had a 5.5 acre property on Long Island, the 'decimated' remains of what was once his 40 acre TB breeding, breaking and training farm. In October , I sold the LI 'farmette', and found the property I'm now on, in Elkton. I brought the horses, and my other companion animals, here, and feel I made a good move. I love Elkton. My little corner of Cecil County has all the advantages of a rural setting, without any of the isolation that rural living can often represent. I'm just 5 miles from town, but have not only my own 'mini' farm, but several other large farms around me. I like living alone, but would enjoy some company when kayaking or biking, or at activities such as the Highland Games, or Fair Hill Races, or a day at Delaware Park Racetrack (their casino does not interest me).
Are you willing to compromise in difficult times and situations?
I compromised when I sold my place on Long Island, and I compromised when I bought 'The Elk River Ranch'. It's a long story .
Willingness to meet others from boM:
I've never met anyone 'via the net', but am hoping to find physically fit friends who have time for daytime activities. I'm not looking for a fast romance, and I prefer to meet people in a group gathering, to start, such as a day at Longwood or LaDew Gardens, or Delaware Park, or Winterthur.
Are you ready to start from scratch?
I've been a widow for 11 years, and like my independence. I'm not looking for a husband, or live-in companion, I'm just looking for some company, to start. Where the path leads, from there, will likely depend upon a hundred different things, none of which can be itemised.
My typical day:
Daily activity on the Elk River Ranch (and Raccoon Refuge) begins early, as the sun peeks over the trees. I let Bella the Beagle out for a run through the 17 acre woods, while I bring my 3 chestnut TBs and 3 ponies into their stalls for breakfast. There are days, of course, when Bella's content to 'sleep in' and the horses content to graze in their 7 acre paddock, until they hear me at the gate. Those days, I take a few extra minutes with my coffee, and the daily Sudoku or Cryptoquote. On dry mornings, while the horses eat, I bring Bella back in for her breakfast, and I go for a morning 10 mile bicycle ride around Locust Point. I'm back in about 35 minutes, to turn the horses back out, and give Bella some more time in the woods to track the previous night's visitors: the deer, raccoon, fox and opossum that call my 25 acres 'home'. If I don't join Bella in the woods, I'll spend some time in the yard, weeding the herb garden, or tending to barn chores, and listening to the song of Bella's baying. When Bella's had enough, and returns from the woods, I put her inside. If tide is rising or high, I load the kayak into my PU, and drive around the corner, to launch from Locust Point Marina. I generally take my digital camera, and try to find something to photograph, while paddling up the Elk to Elkton's Marina Park, just a bit north of Rt. 40. When I get back from the tour of the Elk, I upload the photos, and compose an accomanying essay, for CecilCountyCitizens website 'flora and fauna' forum. I'll often make my 'main' meal of the day at noon, and after eating, take a siesta break. On rising, I'll sometimes do some neglected household chores; laundry, vacuum, straighten up a bit; but not always. Not nearly as often as I should! I'll take some time with e-correspondence, or read a chapter or two from a book. I often have two books 'in progress' - a fiction, and a bio/history tome. In the latter part of the day, I'll watch the news, then Jeopardy. I bring the horses back into their stalls for their evening meal, and drive up to the Y for a soak in their hot tub, a cooling swim, and a long leisurely shower. I've just begun a three-times-a-week 'strength' training routine on the Y's new equipment. I'm not interested in 'body building', but I'd like to be able to keep Breyer's ice cream a part of my evening snack! So, a bit of extra muscle toning seems a good idea. Nighttime, after turning the horses out for the night, I'll watch the raccoons and opossum that visit the feeding stations. If I'm not exhausted, I'll watch a movie on Starz or Encore, or something on HGTV, The Food Network, Discovery, Animal Planet, or perhaps a Law and Order re-run on A&E. Local events at Fair Hill, Longwood Gardens, or a nearby museum, or annual events sponsored by Cecil County towns (such as 'Canal Day', at Chesapeake City), provide agreeable changes to my daily routine. Nightlife away from home doesn't interest me, much, except for the occasional owl walk, or similar nighttime activity.
My Wish List Includes:
Being somewhat 'tied down', with my companion animals, I've not done any traveling since my husband died. I'm considering contacting a UofD equestrian team student, to see if I can find someone trustworthy to mind the horses, here. If I can, then I hope to take a week or two, in , for a riding trek in Great Britain and/or Éire. I spent three weeks, with my husband, in England and Scotland, and would like to return. I'd also like to see more of the USA. I'm not particularly fond of the idea of travel to non-English speaking countries, and would have no interest in travel to arid (MiddleEast) or heavily populated (Asia, India, Indonesia) countries. A lazy riverboat on the Mighty Muddy Mississip, or a cross country trip on the Pacific Northwest line, from, say, Montreal, would be a great journey. But, such a trip will have to wait until at least October of .
