The Gift by JR After tail-gating me for a few miles; I was going seventy mph in a fifty five mph zone on the Interstate, a driver passed me, slowed down to 55 and then ‘shot me the bird’ out their window. I had to slow down or else hit them. At first they upset me, and I admit a few choice words echoed in my car. I almost ‘punched’ my gas-peddle, as they say, and passed them; giving them a taste of their own medicine. But then I thought, that’s what they want. So why join them? Why waste my time, my emotional energy as well as my gas energy on an individual and their immature antics of aggression? Their one finger already alerted me of their IQ. Or how many books they’ve read since Middle School, if in fact they did graduate. Then, after this driver sped on their ‘merry’ way, thankfully, I thought further about this episode. This person tried to bestow on me their bad day. It really doesn’t matter what their deep seeded reason was, what mattered was how I was going to take it, and how it effects me, if I let it. Was I going to allow this stranger to change my attitude for the rest of my day? Was I going to grant this individual that power over me? I say NO to that! This present or gift, as I prefer to call it, is given when it’s not a birthday, anniversary or Christmas. This gift isn’t a physical one, in a box adorned with ribbons, or can it be returned for a refund after it’s opened. Nor can it be asked for from Santa, the Easter Bunny, a Lepricon, the Tooth Fairy or any other mythical caricature one can conjure up. This gift doesn’t have to be excepted and it won’t hurt any feelings from either side, except maybe the instigator of such gifts. But not to worry, they will find someone else that will except their gift. There are plenty out there that will open it and join in this childishly dangerous play. I’m just not one of them. I don’t mind, and to me these sour people just don’t matter. I refuse to except their gift. And, I’ve taken it a step further; off the road, and without a four wheel drive. Anytime I’m confronted with a person that is mean, disrespectful, criticizes, condemns and complains or is having a bad day and wants my day to be the same; I let them keep their gift, smile and be nice, then go on my way. I think of what Groucho Marx had said, “hello, but I must be going.” So ultimately, dear reader, it is up to you. If you want to let someone else, stranger or not, tell you how to feel on a day in your short life, then by all means do it. Join them in their spread of gloom, and in most cases a race to death. I just choose not to; there’s too much beauty in this world to let someone try to change it, whoever they are and whatever their credentials. Whether it be a boss, clerk, server, neighbor, relative, or an ‘X’. Or on the internet, the gift of a nasty email can either be taken to heart and then replying with the same, which is called flaming, or simply deleting it. It’s all ‘rock and roll’ to me, and you and I owe it to ourselves not to be a partner in this exchange, and not open up these unhelpful, negative ‘Gifts.’
