What an interesting question(s). My parents were extremely political, responsible, and educated people. To this day, I admire those qualities and have tried to emulate them. Since I was an only child, I didn't have to compete for their attention. As for qualities that might make people feel comfortable around me, I guess I'd say I'm very patient to get to know someone. It takes time. People don't show you everything about themselves immediately.

My typical day:

I like to get to know people slowly by spending time in person and connecting by email. Good place to start is coffee in a really comfortable spot, informal, with privacy and maybe going for a walk afterwards in nice weather. My days are fairly flexible since I retired last year. Early riser, part of the day out and about, part at home doing yardwork, housework, writing, photography, watching movies, blogging. I look for the good in each day and love to meet new people.

Lately I've been feeling like doing something really radical like moving to the beach or joining an exotic spiritual group or buying a piano or getting a personal trainer. Lots of people my age like to travel but unless I had a really comfortable companion I don't really feel the need. More interested in internal travel these days. I feel like at least I'd like to move to a small house/yard even more private than where I am. When you live in the city, you really need some sense of oasis.
