As a jet mechanic deployed to Okinawa, I was feeling a little 'tired' one Saturday morning. Pulling into a hanger the driver asked me to go grab a maintenance binder up against the hangar wall. I could see that the steel plate covering the underground access tunnel was bent, but didn't care to walk around it. I strode onto it and as my full weight came to bear on itPING!!CRASH!!! I fell through.8 1/2 feet to the bottom! The SGT driving the truck said I was there, he looked down for a second, heard a crash and looked up and I was gone! He was freaked out and the doctors were astonished that I hardly had even a mild concussion!
